Nantucket Noel November 1 - December 31, 2024

Nantucket Island is renowned for its timeless charm and coastal beauty, qualities that shine exceptionally bright during the holiday season. From November 1 to December 31, 2024, the island transforms into a genuine winter wonderland for its two-month-long Nantucket Noel, an event hosted by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce that invites both residents and visitors to bask in the joy of the holidays, from Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Year's Eve.

From the twinkling lights lining Main Street to the nostalgic charm of a 50-year tradition of shopping, dining, and spreading holiday cheer, there's no better time to experience Nantucket's community spirit and seasonal beauty.

Below is a schedule of the major festivities events planned for the 2024 Nantucket Noel celebration.

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Community Caroling

Friday, November 29, Main Street

The holiday season officially starts on Friday, November 29, the day after Thanksgiving, with the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Community Caroling. At 4:00 PM, Main Street comes alive with over 150 trees twinkling in the evening air. This magical display isn't just a visual treat — it's an island-wide tradition that has become the cornerstone of Nantucket Noel.

The Nantucket Town Crier will lead the community in a ceremonial countdown, creating festive and nostalgic anticipation before the lights illuminate the town. Once the trees are aglow, the streets fill with Christmas carols. Nantucket High School's beloved a cappella group serenades the crowd with holiday classics. It's a heartwarming start to the Christmas season and a moment that brings everyone together, whether a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor.

50th Annual Christmas Stroll

Friday, December 6 – Sunday, December 8, 2024

Few holiday events capture the spirit of Nantucket quite like the Annual Christmas Stroll, and this year marks an extra special milestone — its 50th anniversary. This joyous three-day event celebrates a half-century of holiday magic and community pride. What began as a grassroots effort by local merchants in 1973 to encourage islanders to "shop local" has evolved into one of the most enchanting holiday celebrations on the East Coast.

At the heart of the Stroll is the “Stroll Marketplace,” where nearly 50 vendors will set up shop. Here, you'll find an array of merchandise, handcrafted gifts, and seasonal treats — perfect for knocking out your holiday shopping list while supporting local businesses. Food and beverage stalls add to the festive atmosphere, offering everything from hot cider to gourmet bites that will keep you fueled as you explore the island. Check out top vendors like Eat Fire Pizza, Skar Designs Jewelry, and more.

The Christmas Stroll offers much more than just shopping. Main Street buzzes with live music and performances throughout the weekend. Expect to see islanders embracing the fun with an ugly sweater contest, and be sure to admire the town's creativity with the storefront and tree decorating contests.

For those seeking a bit of history, there are walking and holiday house tours that give you a deeper glimpse into the island's storied past. The Friends of Nantucket Public Schools hosts an annual Holiday House Tour showcasing wonderfully decorated properties along historic Main Street. It’s your perfect chance to explore some of the area’s most alluring and unique residences. In previous years, these festively decorated historic properties have included the Hadwen House at 96 Main Street, the Thomas Macy House at 99 Main Street, and Greater Light at 8 Howard Street.

The highlight for many is Santa Claus' arrival on Saturday, December 7. Santa makes a grand entrance at the Wharf and parades up Main Street to the Nantucket Whaling Museum, where children can meet the man in red, take photos, and deliver their letters to the North Pole.

Festival of Trees

Friday, December 6 – Monday, December 30, 2024, Nantucket Whaling Museum

Kicking off during the Christmas Stroll is one of Nantucket's most artistic holiday traditions: the Festival of Trees. Hosted at the Nantucket Whaling Museum, this annual event features an extraordinary display of holiday trees created by local artists, community members, merchants, and nonprofit organizations.

The festival starts with a preview party on Thursday, December 5, allowing patrons a first look at the dazzling creations that transform the museum into a forest of merriment and joyful beauty. From whimsical designs to more traditional holiday themes, the trees showcase the talent and creativity of the island. The Festival of Trees remains on display through December 30, offering visitors ample opportunity to experience the museum's festive transformation.
